Honor Matters at Sewanee

December 6, 2012

A panel entitled Honor Matters was held Nov. 14 in Convocation Hall to discuss the results of a recent student survey on student attitudes toward Sewanee's honor system. This event was the culmination of a semester-long project of Philosophy 101: Ethics of Honor, which had a campus engagement project of partnering with Sewanee's Honor Council to investigate various matters concerning honor at Sewanee. The three parts of the class project included interviews with faculty, staff and students on possible challenges to honor at Sewanee,  a student survey on attitudes and practices related to the honor code (accessible here: Survey Summary), and this campus discussion, featuring Robert Threlkeld, President of the Honor Council; John Swallow, Provost; Julie Berebitsky, Professor of  History and Director of Women's Studies; Scott Wilson, Professor of Political Science; and Jim Peterman, Professor of Philosophy and moderator.

Special thanks go to Robert Threlkeld, President of the Honor Council, whose support of this project was invaluable; Eric Hartman, Dean of Students, whose support made surveying students easy; and to  Media Services and Marketing & Communications, whose joint efforts made it possible to conduct this survey, videotape the discussion, and offer the video to the campus community.
